Dear Caleb: On the Night You Were Born
The night you were born was so bittersweet. As we were saying hello to you, we were saying goodbye to Grandpa Mike. You spent just 8 hours together on Earth, but never got to meet. Even when I might be sad on your birthday because I miss Grandpa Mike, know that you are one special little boy. People all over were waiting, with baited breath for you to be born. Your birth date was no accident; you smile, giggles, and snuggles have been therapeutic for more people than you know. I miss Grandpa Mike, but I am so glad you’re here. The night you were born was one very special night.
On the night you were born,
the moon smiled with such wonder
that the stars peeked in to see you
and the night wind whispered,
“Life will never be the same.”
Because there had never been anyone like you…
ever in the world.
So enchanted with you were the wind and the rain
that they whispered the sound of your wonderful name.
It sailed through the farmland and
high on the breeze…
Over the ocean…
And through the trees…
Until everyone heard it
and everyone knew
of the one and only ever you.
(from On the Night You Were Born by Nancy Tillman)
For you are fearfully and wonderfully made… (Psalm 139:14)
Caleb, on the night you were born, the world changed forever. I will never forget that night full of snuggles and sweet kisses. One year later and I am starting to understand God’s mysterious timing of the night you were born.
Loving you always,
